The Color of Dokos

Dokos or Δοκός is a small Greek island of the Saronic Gulf, adjacent to the island of Hydra, and separated from the Peloponnese mainland by a narrow strait . The population of the island is 13 according to the last national census. The residents are Orthodox monks and sheep herders.

The island is rocky reaching a height of 1010 feet or 308 meters. I On the eastern portion of the island, one can find the ruins of a great Byzantine - Venetian Castle. During the Greek War of Independence, Dokos was used by the forces of Hydra as a port.

Dokos was found to be inhabited since the era of copper, in other words since 6000 BC. In 1975 Peter Throckmorton discovered a ship wreck off the coast of Dokos that is considered to be the oldest ship wreck in the world dating back to 2500 BC.

Poros Πόρος is a small Greek island in the southern Saronic Gulf, some 58 km or 31 nautical miles south from Pireas and separated from the Peloponnese [mainland] by a 200-meter wide sea channel, opposite the town of Galatas on the mainland across the strait. Its area is 31 square kilometers (12 square miles) and it has 4,117 inhabitants. The town of Poros has 4,102 of these inhabitants. The only other inhabited settlement is Ágios Nektários (pop. 15). The ancient name of Poros was Pogon. Like other ports in the Saronic, it is a popular weekend destination for Athenian travelers.


Poros is an island with rich vegetation. Much of the northern and far eastern/western sides of the island are bushy, whereas large areas of old pine forest are found in the south and center of the island. It has a good road network and adequate tourist infrastructure, which makes it a popular resort for short getaways to escape the bustle of the capital. Poros is easily accessible from Athens via ferry or hydrofoil or from Galatas.

Poros has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Graves on the island have been dated to the Mycenaean period, and man-made structures have existed on it since at least 1000 BCE.

The ancient polis of Kalaureia was home to an asylum dedicated to Poseidon, the ruins of which are still accessible on a hilltop close to the town. This asylum may have been linked to the sanctuaries at Geraistos and Tainaros. Historians claimed that Poros was home to an Amphictyony in the Archaic period, a league of the city states Poros, Athens, Prassiai, Aegina, Epidaurus, Hermione, Troizene, Nauplio and Orchomenus.

In Byzantine times, Poros and other islands were often raided by pirates. During the Ottoman occupation Poros remained independent, and helped neighboring islands after the start of the Greek War of Independence.

south coast of Mykonos, some 13 kilometers
from the island's main town.There are plenty
of tavernas to have a cool drink and a bite to
eat after swimming. If you just want to relax

The Color of Hydra

Hydra Ύδρα, is one of the Saronic Islands located in the Aegean Sea. It is separated from the Peloponnese by narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea Υδρέα, which is derived from the Greek word for "water", which was a reference to the springs on the island.

There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port" with a population of 2,526, consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, in which restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals are centered. Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the pensions are located on these streets.

Agios Nikolaos Άγιος Νικόλαος is a seaside town on the
Greek island of Crete, lying east of Heraklio.
In the year 2000, the municipality of Agios Nikolaos,
which takes in part of the surrounding villages
had a population of 19,000 inhabitants.
The town is the capital of the prefecture of Lasithi.
It has an area of 317 square kilometers ore 123 square miles.

Agios Nikolaos was settled in the late Bronze Age
by Dorian occupants of Lato,
at a time when the security of the Lato hill fort
became a lesser concern and access to the harbor
at Agios Nikolaos became sufficiently attractive.

The name Agios Nikolaos means Saint Nicholas,
and its stress lies on the second syllable of the word "Nikolaos".
Agios Nikolaos is a common place-name in Greece
Cyprus, since Saint Nicholas is the patron saint
of sailors and of all of Greece.
