Rio-Antirio Bridge Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου
The Rio-Antirio Bridge or in Greek Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου, officially the Harilaos Trikoupis Bridge after the statesman who first envisioned it, is the World's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patra, linking the town of Rio in the Peloponnese to Antirio.
Its official name is the Harilaos Trikoupis Bridge. Harilaos Trikoupis was a 19th century Greek Prime Minister, and suggested the idea of building a bridge between Rio and Antirio; however the endeavor was too expensive at the time, when Greece was trying to get a late start into the Industrial Revolution. Even later, the bridge was contemplated to be an engineering feat but turned out to be a masterpiece of engineering int-ingenuity owing to several solutions applied to span the difficult site. These difficulties include the depth of water, insecure materials for foundations, seismic activity, hurricane force winds during winter storms, and the expansion of the Gulf of Corinth due to plate tectonics.
